Little League - the only game in town!

Think of the one thing that can make your skin tingle and give you butterflies in your stomach at the same time and that is the feeling you get the first time you see your child play Little League. The excitement that is felt by players, parents and fans at Little League games are the same emotions you feel when watching a Major League game. The game of Little League is for every child no matter what there abilities are; we have a place for your child to play!

Why Little League?

Little League has T-ball, baseball and softball programs. Little League is for boys and girls from ages 5-18 years.

A few facts: Over 9,000 kids play in the 17 Little Leagues in Calgary and surrounding communities. There are more children per capita playing Little League baseball and softball in Calgary than in any other city in North America. The Challenger Division gives our city's physically challenged kids a great setting in which to experience the excitement of playing the game.

So you think Calgary's playing season is too short to produce good ball players? Chris Reitsma and Tim Nelson will disagree. Chris was drafted in the second round by the Boston Red Sox in the 1996 high school draft - the highest draft pick of a Canadian player ever. Tim signed with the Baltimore Orioles organization out of college in 1998. And, the 50+ athletes playing baseball and softball in colleges would probably have something to say as well.

Wondering about the quality of ball? Well, in the last ten years, teams from Calgary Little Leagues have played in two Little League Baseball World Series and 11 Canadian Championships, and in every Little League Softball Canadian Championship.

What's up for Little League in Calgary in 2008? First, a lot of great fun! And second, many weekend fun tournaments. All of the leagues are looking for coaches and umpires. They provide volunteer screening, clinics and training under both the NCCP and NUCP programs and the Little League International program. So it is pretty clear isn't it? Little League softball and baseball really are the only games in town.
